After the COVID 19 Pandemic, many movies have started to release directly on OTT platforms and some movies get released immediately on OTT after 3 to 4 weeks of their successful run in theatres.

These days OTT vs Theatres have become a common question for every movie lover. Rarely a movie runs in theatres for 30 days due to the safety measures taken by a certain section of the audience against the outside pandemic situations and also due to the increase in ticket prices.

In the earlier days, when a blockbuster movie was released in theatres it used to run for 200 days whereas the super hit films used to run for 100 to 150 days. Slowly after the OTT platforms came, a superhit movie rarely runs for 50 days in theatres.

Theatres After COVID Pandemic

OTT vs Theatres

After the COVID-19 Pandemic, blockbuster movies are finding it difficult to run in theatres for about 30 to 50 days, and this became one of the main reasons for the increase in ticket prices.

Since the COVID-19 Pandemic started in 2020, many theatres were shut down and from January 2021 Theatres started to reopen slowly imposing rules and regulations on audience seating capacity and maintaining social distancing by wearing masks and proper sanitizing methods.

OTT vs Theatres

From January 2021 to April 2021 some movies were released in theatres and experienced a good amount of profit. But, again in May 2021, the COVID Pandemic started forcing all theatres, shopping malls, and restaurants to shut down.

Slowly after September 2021, theatres began to open and some Telugu movies started collecting a good amount of collections.

Recently when India’s one of the biggest and latest blockbuster movies “RRR” was released, the Multiplex tickets were priced at Rs 400-450 each in the city for the first three days of its release, between March 25-March 27 2022 whereas in the case of single screens, tickets for RRR cost Rs 200-230 each.

However, four tickets will cost Rs 2,000 for a high-budget film to watch on big screens which are too costly for a common man to afford.

OTT vs Theatres

Previously, theatres have been an entertaining platform for all movie lovers. But with the changing times and increase in OTT platforms and streaming apps in India, the competition gets tougher day by day. Both Theatres and OTT have their own pros and cons which will be discussed in detail.

1.Watching movies in theatres gives a different cinematic experience, which cannot be replaced by any content streaming platform. For binge-watchers and for big families, going to theatres is expensive in the long run.
2.The quality of the picture presented on the screen at a movie theater is going to be much higher than that at your home. The higher quality makes it easier to see, and the experience feels more like real life.During the COVID pandemic, people preferred staying at home. So, this proved that theatres cannot survive in epidemics, pandemics, and in other similar situations.
3.For people who can appreciate great graphics and enjoy the art and design that went into putting a movie together, chances are you are going to love the movie theater. The huge expenses that we have to pay for watching a movie at the cinema are a very big problem. A lot of people like to watch movies at the cinema halls but they are not able to do so due to the high expenses of the cinema halls and also including other expenses such as car parking, food, traveling, etc.
4.To watch and experience 3D and 4D movies, many people have to go to theatres. So, OTT platforms cannot completely replace theatres. You have to mold your schedule according to that of the cinema if you want to go there to watch movies. This creates a lot of problems and has to reach theatres at the correct time which may not be possible at all times.
5.The advanced audio and visual technology make it much easier to follow along with what characters are saying in a movie.Watching a movie at the theatre may prove very harmful for the ones with weak eyesight or even the person with the strong one. Since the screen is too big and there is no other source of light while the movie is going on, the eyes of people watching the movie are affected adversely.
6.Watching movies at a cinema hall offers you the most mesmerizing sound quality which could actually give you the best overall experience. Sound is probably the soul thing in a movie which could make it a masterpieceIt may take people a long time to feel safe going to a movie theatre, as there is still a risk of exposure to contracting the COVID-19.

1.We can watch the content whenever and wherever we want to. OTT platforms provide flexibility and convenience. For people who watch movies occasionally, OTT platforms are expensive.
2.Some people, who live in remote areas do not have theatres nearby. And for some others, going to theatres is difficult due to disability or restrictions. OTT platforms are inclusive and enable everyone to watch the content from home.Indian films make huge profits by releasing movies in US and European countries. But with releasing movies on OTT platforms, they are losing one of the main revenue sources.
3.Sometimes, makers of small movies struggle to release their movies in theatres. Moreover, they do not afford to spend so much money on promoting the movie. when there are no famous stars in the movie, it’s a bit difficult to bring the audience to the theatres. For them, OTT platforms are a much-added advantage. They can reach a wider audience. Not everyone has smart TV or smartphone yet. Moreover, to watch and experience 3D and 4D movies, many people have to go to theatres. So, OTT platforms cannot completely replace theatres.
4.OTT platforms are making original movies, which are getting applause for the quality content. This is forcing regular movie makers to think differently and to make quality content. The growth of OTT platforms is a threat to many jobs in theatres. Even though OTT platforms are creating plenty of new jobs, they are skilled jobs. Due to OTT platforms, theatres are not getting enough returns for their investment.
5.For binge-watchers, OTT platforms are cost-effective. As there is no need to pay for each and every movie, people can watch plenty of movies and other content for just a subscription price.Unstable connection is another disadvantage of streaming online. As the content is in HD quality, a poor network speed will make it rather difficult to let you watch the media uninterrupted.
This option limits access to the material to people who don’t have an online presence.
6.NRIs (Non-resident Indians) can now easily watch Indian movies on OTT platforms.Thousands of such platforms are unsafe for you as you are vulnerable to losing your confidential information while paying for a subscription.
Cybercrime can happen on platforms that ask you for your personal information, including your bank details.
7.As OTT platforms are providing subtitles for many movies, we can watch movies in other languages too. This facility is giving us a wide variety of content choices. There are no age limitations for viewership. One of the concerning disadvantages of the OTT Platform is that there are no restrictions on the content. Such content may be harmful to underage users.

Both Theatres and OTT have their own advantages and disadvantages. Recently, OTT platforms have developed and increased a lot and many new OTT platforms have been launched. But that doesn’t mean that in the future OTT will completely replace the theatres. Both these platforms will consistently perform well by entertaining the audience in their own aspects.
