Theatre Owners' New Demand: Should Movies Stream On OTT Platforms After 8 Weeks Of Their Release?

Theatre Owners’ New Demand: Recently, the members of Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association (TNTMOA) have made a new demand regarding the early release of movies on OTT Platforms immediately after their theatrical run.

The resolution has been passed to fulfill their demands and will soon be expressed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin.

These were some of the demands of Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association (TNTMOA):

  1. License renewal should be made after 3 years by theatre owners.
  2. Local Taxes should be removed on tickets.
  3. Increase in maintenance cost to provide facilities, types of equipment, and other accessories.
  4. Ticket prices should remain stable without adding different taxes.

Theatre owners have demanded that star actors’ movies and big-budget films should release on OTT after 8 weeks of their theatrical run rather than 4 weeks.

But what if star actors’ movies are not up to the mark and receive poor responses from audiences? In that case, those big actors find it difficult to run even for 1 week in theatres.

Recent big actors’ movies such as Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha(2022) and Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan (2022) released on 11th August 2022 have performed poorly at the box office and audiences are not showing any interest to watch these movies in theatres on the second day of its theatrical run.

Also, this is the lowest opening of Aamir Khan’s movie in the past 13 years of his career. Even, the opening day collections of both these Bollywood movies were not impressive.

As a result, many theatres have decided to reduce more than 1000 shows after receiving responses to canceled shows and a low number of audiences appearing.

For instance, the latest blockbuster movies like KGF: Chapter 2 (2022), Vikram (2022), and Pushpa (2021) have been released on the OTT Platform immediately after 3 to 4 weeks of their theatrical run.

Theatre Owners’ New Demand: Overall News

According to the Theatre Owners’ new demands, those were the olden days when a movie used to run for 50 to 100 days or even more. These days due to the increase in the cost of ticket prices, audiences are finding it difficult to afford.

Even if the movie is worth watching, audiences still think to watch it the second time in theatres.

Many Theatre owners in Tami Nadu stated that after the COVID-19 Pandemic, the ticket prices in Tamil Nadu were stable compared to other states like Maharashtra, Kerela, and Telangana.

Especially after the COVID-19 Pandemic, a large number of people started to prefer watching movies on OTT Platforms due to an increase in ticket prices and their health safety.

Many movie makers are ready to spend a high budget so that audiences start to prefer theatres rather than OTTs and experience the best cinematic feel in big cinema halls.
